The lily magnolia (Magnolia liliflora or Magnolia liliiflora) is a deciduous shrub that sports perfumed blossoms that can be pink or reddish-purple. It is one of the smaller species found in the Magnolia genus. This shrub has been crossed with the Yulan magnolia (Magnolia denudata) and the result is the saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana.). You may see two different spellings used for this species. It can be either Magnolia liliflora or Magnolia liliiflora. It is placed in the Magnoliaceae family long with the other magnolia trees and shrub, the banana shrub (Michelia figo) and the tulip tree(Liriodendron tulipifera).
There are several names that are associated with this tree. You may see lily magnolia, purple magnolia, woody-orchid, red magnolia, Jane magnolia, Japanese magnolia, tulip magnolia or Mulan magnolia. If you live in Zones 5-9, this is a possible choice for your garden. It comes from China originally. This magnolia is a shrub, not a tree. Lily magnolia is a bushy, rounded deciduous shrub which gets up to 13 ft (4 m) high with a spread about the same. The leaves are large, to 8 in (20 cm) long and 4 in (10 cm) wide. The goblet shaped fragrant flowers are pink to purplish, about 3 in (8 cm) across and produced in spring and sporadically through the summer. The selection 'Gracilis' has a more slender form and more slender leaves and the flowers are rich purple. 'Nigra' is smaller, and blooms at a very young age with larger, especially dark crimson-purple flowers. A hybrid between M. liliiflora 'Nigra' and M. campbellii, known as MagnoliaX 'Star Wars' is a vigorous tree with large, remarkably showy purple-pink flowers.
Several cultivars now available are the result of hybridization between M. liliiflora 'Nigra' and M. stellata 'Rosea'. These tend to be smaller and more cold hardy than lily magnolia itself. Saucer magnolia (M. X soulangeana) is a hybrid between lily magnolia and Yulan magnolia (M. heptapeta).
Live cicle :
Magnolias can be grown from seeds, from cuttings or by grafting. Seeds are spread by birds, mammals and heavy rains and germinate during the first or second spring after the seed falls. Young seedlings are susceptible to damage from frost.
When magnolias are a few feet high and about 2 to 4 inches in diameter, they're referred to as saplings. Unlike seedlings, which have a single tap root, saplings develop an extensive root system. Trees with a diameter of 3 to 7 inches are called poles.
Trees grown from seeds have a juvenile stage during which they can't produce flowers or seeds. This juvenile stage can last 20 or 25 years, but some magnolias start producing seeds in 10 years.
Magnolia trees produce perfect flowers, containing both male and female parts. Flowers are fertilized when bees and beetles carry pollen from one flower to another. Individual magnolia flowers may be receptive to fertilization for less than a day.
The average lifespan of magnolias varies, depending on the species. Southern magnolias tend to live around 80 years, but some trees live as long as 120 years.
